48% of U.S. Bees Disappeared Last Year. Our Food Depends on Them. Here Are 5 Things You Can Do

By Jessica M.

Last Updated Mar 3.2024

Most people don’t realize it, but bees are responsible for pollinating over a third of the food we eat — including almonds, apples, blueberries, squash, coffee, and even avocados.

And yet, in the past year alone, the U.S. lost nearly half of its managed honey bee colonies.

This isn’t just an environmental issue.
It’s a food issue.
And it’s happening faster than most of us think.

I’m not a beekeeper — but I wanted to help.
So I looked into what I could actually do from home.

Here are 5 small, real ways to support the bees — starting today.

P.S. Stick around till the end — I arranged a little surprise for you. You won’t want to miss it. 🐝

1. Grow Native Flowers — Even If You Live in an Apartment

Pollinators don’t need perfect gardens. They need variety, color, and native species. Even a single flower box on a windowsill can serve as a safe landing zone for bees.

Pro tip: Use local wildflower seed packs and skip anything labeled “double bloom” — they often lack nectar.

2. Choose Gifts That Fund Bee Education

Once I understood how serious the situation was, I realized we’re not just losing bees —
we’re losing the knowledge about them, too.

That’s when I came across Beezzit, a small U.S.-based shop that sells bee-themed gifts — things like kitchen tools, wall prints, and delicate jewelry.

But what really stood out wasn’t the products themselves.
It was their partnership with Planet Bee Foundation, through which every order helps fund real classroom lessons about pollination, ecosystems, and why bees matter.

I picked out a bag from their shop — something simple, but symbolic — and it felt good to know it was part of something bigger than just a gift.

👉 I ended up buying from them myself — and every order helps fund real classroom lessons about bees. If you want to support something bigger than just a gift, check them out  beezzit.com

3. Rethink What You Spray 🚫

Even if you’re not using harsh pesticides, many everyday lawn treatments still harm bees — especially neonicotinoids, which are devastating to pollinators.

If you can, go natural: try vinegar for weeds, or mulch to suppress growth.
And consider leaving a few “weeds” like clover and dandelions — bees love them.

Sometimes, “imperfect” is exactly what the planet needs.

4. Buy Your Honey (and Beeswax) Locally 🍯

Mass-produced honey often comes from overseas, stripped of its natural pollen, and offers little support to struggling beekeepers.

When you buy honey or beeswax products from a local apiary or farmers market, you’re keeping a small operation alive.
That’s one less person forced to sell their hives.

You also get a better product — raw, flavorful, and full of natural character.

5. Start the Conversation 📣

Bees don’t post updates. They don’t show up in headlines.

But the more we talk — whether it’s over dinner or online — the more people pay attention.

Tell your kids. Tell your friends. Share a fact. Forward this list.

Because awareness doesn’t just spread knowledge — it sparks action.

You Don’t Have to Do Everything — Just One Thing.

You don’t need to become a beekeeper to make a difference.

Sometimes it starts with planting one flower.
Or choosing a gift that supports something bigger.
Or just having a conversation that keeps the buzz alive.

We still have time — but only if we act.
And even the smallest actions matter more than we think.

So here’s your moment.
Pick one thing. Start today.
Maybe it’s planting wildflowers.
Maybe it’s talking to your kids.
Maybe it’s supporting a place like Beezzit, where everyday choices help fund real bee education.

Whatever it is — the bees will thank you.

And as for the surprise I promised you at the beginning — here it is:
