Buzz buzz! If you are anything like us, you have probably waited until the very last minute to pull off the perfect Halloween costume. Or maybe you are not that into complicated sewing projects but still wanting something that is super adorable and easy to make at home. Either way, you are in for a real treat-not a trick! Let’s talk about how to make a super cute, no stress bee DIY costume at home. We have always loved bees. They are hard working, adorable little pollinators and they make for an irresistibly charming costume. Whether for your kid, niece or even yourself, this no-sew bee look is sweet as honey. And the best part? You probably have most of the things lying around your home.
Why choose a no-sew bee DIY costume?
There are plenty of reasons why this has been our go-to costume idea. First, it is super budget friendly, there is no doubt about that. You get to use old clothes and materials that you already own. Second, it is sustainable too. And third, and most importantly, it is incredibly fun to make with the little ones helping with painting and assembling.

How to make?
Making the bee body
Start with a solid yellow base. This can be a T-shirt, a dress or even a jumpsuit. Anything works as long as it is yellow. Cut black felt or fleece into horizontal strips. Make sure that these are at least 3 inches wide. These will be your bee stripes.
Use removable fabric tape to attach the strips horizontally across the torso. Removable fabric tape eliminates the need to sew, plus you can peel these straight off after use. This makes the bee DIY costume both versatile and eco-conscious. If you don’t plan to reuse the clothing, then a fabric glue will offer a more secure hold.
Designing the wings
Now comes the more fun part. Use a large piece of cardboard and draw one side of a wing on folded paper to make a symmetrical template. Once you are happy with the shape of the wing, you can trace it out on the cardboard and cut it out. Now, paint the wings with a soft ivory or white base color and let it dry. After the paint has completely dried, use a thin brush and black paint to trace over your lines. Don’t worry about being perfect here-the more organic, the better. That natural vibe makes your bee DIY costume feel whimsical and earthy.
For an added flair, glue a small piece of bark or driftwood in the center of the wings to reinforce the center for better durability.
Attach straps
Now you want to make the wings wearable. And you need to make straps for it. Cut two pieces of elastic and glue them to the back of the cardboard. These will act like backpack straps and help hold the wings in place. Remember to measure for the person wearing the costume for a more snug fit.
After the straps are dry and secure, gently bend the wings outward along the center so they have a natural shape when worn.
Make the antenna headband
No bee DIY costume is complete without those signature antennae! To make the antenna headband, wrap two long pieces of floral wire around the top of your headband and twist the tips into little coils for safety and sun style.
Make the headbands more comfortable to wear by gluing a small strip of fleece underneath where the wire wraps around. Then use black washi tape or electrical tape to cover the wire and secure everything in place. Wrap the tape all the way up the wire to finish off the bouncy little antennas.
Tips to personalize your bee DIY costume
Here are a few simple steps that can make your bee DIY costume extra special
- Try adding glitter to the wings. This gives it a sparkly, fairy-bee effect.
- Try painting with glow in the dark paint for nighttime visibility.
- Pair it up with black shoes and yellow socks or tights to tie the entire look together.
- For a group costume, have friends or family dress up as flowers, honey pots or even a beekeeper!
